Windows Update Is Stuck or Failing

Windows Update may occasionally become stuck, fail to install an update, or repeatedly display an error.

Follow the steps below before attempting more advanced troubleshooting.

Step 1: Restart Your PC

Restart Windows completely and check for updates again.

A pending restart can prevent Windows Update from completing correctly.

Step 2: Check Your Internet Connection

Make sure your internet connection is stable.

If possible:

  • Restart your router

  • Avoid using a VPN temporarily

  • Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi

  • Confirm websites and downloads work normally

Step 3: Check Available Storage

Windows needs free storage space to download and install updates.

Open:

Settings > System > Storage

Make sure your Windows drive has sufficient free space.

Step 4: Check for Updates Again

Open:

Settings > Windows Update

Select Check for updates.

If Windows shows a specific error code, save or screenshot it.

Step 5: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Open:

Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters

Find Windows Update and run the troubleshooter if it is available on your Windows version.

Apply any recommended fixes and restart your PC.

Step 6: Repair Windows System Files

Corrupted system files can prevent Windows Update from working correctly.

Run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart your PC afterward.

Step 7: Try the Update Again

Return to Windows Update and attempt the installation again.

Avoid Repeatedly Forcing Shutdowns

Do not repeatedly power off your PC while Windows displays messages such as:

  • Working on updates

  • Installing updates

  • Do not turn off your computer

Interrupting an update during installation can damage Windows files.

Still Failing?

If the update continues to fail, contact EXM Support or Microsoft Support and include:

  • The update name

  • KB number, if shown

  • Windows version

  • Error code

  • Screenshot of the issue

  • Troubleshooting steps already attempted
