Windows Keeps Freezing or Becoming Unresponsive

Windows freezes can originate from software, drivers, unstable hardware, overheating, storage problems, or background applications.

1. Determine What Is Freezing

Try to determine whether:

  • One application freezes

  • Windows Explorer freezes

  • The entire PC freezes

  • The mouse still moves

  • Audio continues playing

  • The PC eventually recovers

This information helps narrow down the cause.

2. Check Task Manager

Press:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Look for unusually high:

  • CPU usage

  • Memory usage

  • Disk usage

  • GPU usage

Also check whether a specific application shows Not responding.

3. Restart the PC

If Windows remains usable, perform a normal restart.

Avoid repeatedly holding the power button unless the system is completely unresponsive.

4. Check Temperatures

Excessive CPU or GPU temperatures can contribute to instability.

Use a hardware-monitoring utility to check temperatures while the issue occurs.

5. Remove Unstable Tuning

Temporarily return any:

  • CPU overclock

  • GPU overclock

  • Undervolt

  • RAM tuning

  • Custom performance profile

to known-stable settings.

6. Update Important Drivers

Check:

  • GPU drivers

  • Chipset drivers

  • Storage drivers

  • Windows Update

7. Repair Windows

Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then:

sfc /scannow

8. Perform a Clean Boot

If the freezing stops during a clean boot, a third-party service or startup program is likely involved.

Still Freezing?

Repeated hard freezes can indicate deeper hardware instability involving RAM, storage, CPU, GPU, or the power supply.

If the freezing began immediately after an EXM change, revert the most recent optimization and retest.
