What to Do When EXM Backup Creation Fails
EXM includes a built-in Backup page that can create a Windows restore point before you apply system changes. We also create one for you on first launch.
If EXM cannot create a backup, the issue is usually related to Windows System Protection rather than the optimizations themselves.
Step 1: Check Whether System Protection Is Enabled
Press the Windows key and search:
Create a restore point
Open the result.
Under Protection Settings, locate your Windows drive, usually C:.
Make sure Protection shows:
On
If it shows Off:
Select the Windows drive.
Click Configure.
Select Turn on system protection.
Apply the change.
Step 2: Try Creating a Restore Point Through Windows
While still inside System Properties:
Click Create.
Enter a name such as:
EXM Test Backup
Click Create.
If Windows cannot create a restore point manually either, the issue is not limited to EXM.
Step 3: Check Available Disk Space
Windows requires available storage space for restore points.
Make sure your Windows drive is not completely full.
If storage is critically low, free up space and try again.
Step 4: Restart Your PC
Restart Windows and attempt to create the backup again.
A restart can resolve temporary issues with Windows services used by System Restore.
Step 5: Run EXM as Administrator
Close EXM.
Right-click EXM and select:
Run as administrator
Navigate to the Backup page and try creating the restore point again.
Step 6: Check Whether Windows System Restore Works
If manual restore point creation continues to fail, troubleshoot Windows System Restore before continuing.
EXM relies on Windows restore-point functionality for this backup method.
Can I Still Use EXM?
We strongly recommend creating a restore point before applying significant optimizations.
If Windows cannot create one, resolve the backup issue first whenever possible.
