Windows Is Stuck on a Black Screen After Login

If Windows accepts your login but only displays a black screen, the issue may involve Windows Explorer, your graphics driver, startup software, or a recent system change.

You may still see your mouse cursor even though the desktop and taskbar are missing.

Step 1: Restart the Graphics Driver

Press:

Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

Windows will attempt to restart the graphics driver.

Your screen may briefly flash and you may hear a sound.

If the desktop appears afterward, the issue may have been related to the graphics driver.

Step 2: Open Task Manager

Press:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc

If Task Manager opens, look for Windows Explorer.

If it appears:

  1. Right-click Windows Explorer.

  2. Select Restart.

If Windows Explorer does not appear:

  1. Select Run new task in Task Manager.

  2. Enter:

explorer.exe
  1. Press Enter.

If your desktop and taskbar appear, Windows Explorer was not starting correctly.

Step 3: Check Your Display Mode

Windows may occasionally output the desktop to the wrong display.

Press:

Windows + P

Try switching between:

  • PC screen only

  • Duplicate

  • Extend

  • Second screen only

If you recently connected or disconnected another monitor, this is especially worth checking.

Step 4: Restart the PC

Perform a normal restart if possible.

Temporary Windows Shell or graphics-driver problems may clear after restarting.

Step 5: Boot Into Safe Mode

If the black screen continues, boot into Safe Mode.

From the Windows Recovery Environment:

Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart

Then select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.

If Windows works normally in Safe Mode, the problem may involve:

  • Graphics drivers

  • Startup applications

  • Third-party services

  • Windows customization software

Step 6: Check Your Graphics Driver

Inside Safe Mode, open:

Device Manager → Display adapters

If the issue began after a graphics-driver update, consider rolling back the driver.

You can also reinstall the latest appropriate driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.

See our Reinstalling Graphics Drivers guide for additional instructions.

Step 7: Disable Unnecessary Startup Applications

A startup application may be preventing the Windows desktop from loading correctly.

Open:

Task Manager → Startup apps

Disable recently installed or unnecessary startup applications and restart Windows.

Step 8: Use System Restore

If the problem began after a recent driver, update, or system change, use a restore point from before the problem started.

From the Windows Recovery Environment:

Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore

Select a restore point created before the black-screen issue began.

Still Seeing a Black Screen?

If the issue continues, consider whether it started after:

  • A Windows update

  • A GPU driver update

  • Installing new software

  • Changing display settings

  • Applying system optimizations

If the issue began immediately after applying an EXM optimization, revert the most recent relevant change and test again.
