Windows Is Using Too Much RAM

High memory usage does not automatically mean something is wrong.

Windows intentionally uses available RAM to cache frequently accessed information and improve performance. Cached memory can be released when applications need it.

Troubleshooting is most useful when memory usage remains extremely high and causes:

  • Stuttering

  • Applications closing

  • System slowdowns

  • Out-of-memory errors

  • Excessive pagefile usage

1. Check Task Manager

Press:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Open Processes and sort by Memory.

Look for applications consuming unusually large amounts of RAM.

2. Close Applications You Do Not Need

Browsers, launchers, editing applications, virtual machines, and games can consume several gigabytes of memory.

Close applications you are not actively using.

3. Restart the Application

If one application's memory usage continuously increases over time, it may have a memory leak.

Close and reopen the application.

4. Restart Windows

If memory usage remains abnormally high even after closing programs, restart your PC.

5. Check Startup Applications

Disable unnecessary startup applications through:

Task Manager → Startup apps

6. Check How Much RAM You Actually Have

A PC with 8 GB of RAM will reach high utilization much sooner than a PC with 16 GB or 32 GB.

High utilization by itself does not necessarily indicate a Windows problem.

7. Do Not Disable the Pagefile Without a Specific Reason

The Windows pagefile is part of Windows memory management.

Disabling it can create crashes or out-of-memory errors in some workloads.
